Steel Spur Gears
Brand: Hansheng
Accuracy grade: ISO/DIN/GB level 5
Gear module: 0.1–5.0
Tip diameter: 3 mm–300 mm
Introduction
Steel spur gears are the most widely used gear type in precision mechanical systems — It features a simple geometric structure, strong load-bearing capacity, and a wide range of heat treatment options.
We manufacture custom steel spur gears from raw material to finished part, holding ISO/DIN/GB Level 5 accuracy across modules from 0.1 to 5.0 and tip diameters from 3mm to 300mm. Whether you need a one-off prototype or a high-volume production run, we engineer each gear to your exact drawing.

Why Steel for Spur Gears?
High Tensile Strength
Handles heavy loads and shock without deformation
Excellent Machinability
Compatible with hobbing, skiving, shaping, and broaching
Heat Treatment Friendly
Responds well to carbonitriding, carburizing, nitriding, and induction hardening for surface hardness up to HRC 60+
Wide Material Selection
From carbon steels (S45C, 1045) to high-performance alloy steels (20CrMnTi, 42CrMo) depending on your load and wear requirements

Manufacturing Processes
We select the most appropriate process for your gear based on geometry, required precision, and production volume.
Gear Hobbing
Our Ningjiang YK3610IV CNC horizontal gear hobbing machine is the workhorse for steel spur gear production. Ideal for external gears in medium-to-high volumes, achieving GB/ISO Level 6–7 in a single operation — then elevated to Level 5 through subsequent skiving or grinding.
Gear Skiving
Using the Kashifuji KPS30 gear skiving machine, we achieve GB/ISO Level 5–7 on both external and internal spur gears in a single setup. Skiving is particularly effective for gears with tight space constraints or those requiring high accuracy without a separate grinding step.
Gear Shaping
For spur gears with shoulders, flanges, or other features that prevent hobbing tool runout, gear shaping provides flexible internal and external tooth cutting. Achieves GB/ISO Level 7–9.
Gear Broaching
For small internal spur gears in high-volume production, broaching delivers consistent GB/ISO Level 8–11 accuracy at the lowest per-piece cost.
Heat Treatment Options
| Process | Surface Hardness | Case Depth | Best For |
| Carbonitriding | HRC 58-63 | 0.1–0.75mm | High wear resistance, fatigue life, lower distortion |
| Carburizing + Quenching | HRC 58-62 | 0.5–2.0mm | Heavy load, deep case required |
| Nitriding | HV 900+ | 0.1–0.5mm | High surface hardness, minimal distortion |
| Induction Hardening | HRC 50-58 | Selective | Large gears, tooth-by-tooth hardening |
| Quench & Temper | HRC 28-35 (through) | Full section | Toughness over surface hardness |
Note: Carbonitriding is our recommended process for most steel spur gear applications — it simultaneously diffuses carbon and nitrogen into the tooth surface, delivering excellent wear resistance and fatigue strength while keeping dimensional distortion lower than conventional carburizing.
Applications
Steel spur gears manufactured by our are used across industries where precision, durability, and consistent performance are non-negotiable:
- Tobacco Packaging Machinery — high-speed synchronous drives
- Industrial Automation — conveyor drives, actuators, indexing systems
- Robotics — joint transmission, collaborative robot axes
- Automotive — transmission sub-assemblies, EV powertrain components
- Medical Devices — surgical tools, imaging equipment drives
- Aerospace & Defense — auxiliary drive systems, precision positioning
Quality Assurance
Every steel spur gear we ship is backed by documented inspection:
- ZEISS CMM full-profile measurement (32-point tooth trace)
- Tooth pitch deviation, profile deviation, helix deviation per ISO 1328
- Hardness test report (Rockwell / Vickers) post heat treatment
- Third-party inspection and SGS witnessing accepted
FAQ
We accept orders from 5 pieces. For prototype and sampling orders, standard lead time is 1–2 weeks. Production runs are quoted based on quantity and complexity.
We work directly from customer drawings (DXF, DWG, STEP, PDF). If you have a sample gear without a drawing, we can reverse-engineer and manufacture to match.
Yes. We provide mill certificates for all raw materials. RoHS and REACH compliance documentation is available on request.
Heat treatment inevitably introduces minor distortion. For Level 5 requirements, we perform a post-heat-treatment skiving pass on the KPS30 to restore tooth geometry to within specification. This is verified by CMM before shipment.
