Introduction
Custom Precision Steel Bevel Gears for Industrial Transmission
Hansheng Automation is a precision gear manufacturer with over 10 years of experience in custom gear production.
We support both straight bevel gears and spiral bevel gears in a wide range of steel grades, with tooth profiles machined to ISO/DIN/GB Grade 5–9 precision. Whether you need a one-off prototype or a batch of production parts, we deliver from drawing to finished gear with full quality documentation.
Why Steel for Bevel Gears?
Steel Bevel Gears, due to the properties of their material, result in finished products with the following characteristics:
- High tensile and fatigue strength
- Heat treatment friendly – friendly to heat treatment processes such as carburizing
- Dimensional stability – minimal thermal deformation
- Machinability
- Broad material selection – from general-purpose carbon steel to alloy and stainless steel, matched to your load, corrosion, and cost requirements

Manufacturing Process
Tooth Profile Machining
Straight bevel gears are machined on our 5-axis CNC machining centers, which allows complete tooth profile generation in a single setup. Especially important for non-standard tooth forms or small-batch custom orders.
Spiral bevel gears are produced using the Gleason cutting process, which generates the curved tooth flank geometry required for smooth, high-speed transmission. This process is the industry standard for spiral bevel gears used in automotive and industrial gearbox applications.
Gear Grinding
For applications requiring ISO/DIN/GB Grade 5 precision, we perform gear grinding as a final tooth-finishing operation. Grinding removes heat treatment distortion and brings the tooth flank geometry and surface roughness to specification. This process is applied to both straight and spiral bevel gears where high-accuracy meshing is critical.
Heat Treatment Options
Heat treatment, as an important part of steel grade gear manufacturing, we provide the following common heat treatment processes.
| Process | Surface Hardness | Effect | Recommended For |
| Carburizing + Quenching | HRC 58–62 | Hard surface, tough core | 20CrMnTi — high-cycle, heavy-load drives |
| Induction Hardening | HRC 50–58 | Localized hardening, minimal distortion | 42CrMo, 40Cr — medium-heavy load |
| Quench + Temper (Q&T) | HRC 28–35 | Through hardness, improved toughness | General alloy steel gears |
| Nitriding | HV 600–1000 | Ultra-high surface hardness, no distortion, corrosion-resistant | Precision or corrosive environments |
All heat-treated gears are inspected for hardness (Rockwell / Vickers) before proceeding to finish machining or grinding.

Surface Treatment Options
| Treatment | Purpose |
| Blackening (Black Oxide) | Anti-rust, clean appearance |
| Zinc Plating | Corrosion protection for moderate environments |
| Phosphating | Base layer for oil retention, anti-corrosion |
| Precision Grinding (as-ground finish) | Required for Grade 5 mesh accuracy |
Customization Capabilities
We provide comprehensive custom bevel gear services. The following parameters are all customizable:
- Tooth form — straight teeth or Gleason-process spiral teeth
- Spiral hand — left or right
- Bore & keyway — custom bore diameter, keyway dimensions, and quantity
- Hub length and OD — matched to your shaft and housing design
- Marking / engraving — part number, material grade, or logo
- Paired sets — pinion and gear supplied as a matched, run-in pair
If you have existing drawings (DXF, DWG, STEP, PDF), we manufacture directly to your specifications. If you do not have drawings, share your transmission parameters (ratio, torque, speed, shaft dimensions) and our engineering team will develop the gear design for your review before production.
Quality Assurance
Every batch of steel bevel gears goes through the following inspection steps before shipment:
Material verification
incoming steel certificate checked against order specification
Dimensional inspection
CMM measurement of bore, OD, face width, and mounting surfaces
Gear profile inspection
tooth profile, lead, pitch, and runout checked against ISO/DIN/GB tolerance tables
Hardness testing
Rockwell or Vickers hardness confirmed post heat treatment
Mesh test
mating gear pairs run together under light load to verify contact pattern and noise level
Visual inspection
tooth flank surface quality, burrs, and marking checked before packaging
Material test reports and inspection records are available upon request.
FAQ
high torque and impact load conditions, 42CrMo steel with quenching and tempering treatment is recommended.
applications requiring higher surface hardness, 20CrMnTi steel with carburizing and quenching treatment is recommended.
Yes. Grade 5 precision is achieved through our gear grinding process, which is applied after heat treatment to correct any distortion.
In general, we mainly customize based on drawings. If you do not have drawings, you need to provide parameters such as transmission ratio, input speed, torque, shaft diameter, etc. Our engineers will generate a gear design scheme for you to confirm.
Yes. We can supply bevel gear sets lapped and tested as matched pairs, with contact pattern confirmed before shipment. This is the recommended approach for precision drive applications.
Our minimum order quantity for custom steel bevel gears is 5 pieces. Prototype quantities of 1–2 pieces are also available — please contact us to discuss lead time and pricing.
Yes. We provide mill certificates for raw material, heat treatment records, and dimensional inspection reports as standard documentation for each order.
