How we manufacture matched worm gear sets

We produce every Hansheng worm gear set as a matched pair on a synchronized manufacturing line.

Worm Shaft – Precision Thread Whirling

For the driving element (Worm Shaft), we utilize high-speed CNC Thread Whirling as our primary manufacturing process.
We achieve ISO/DIN Grade 6 accuracy with an excellent surface finish, and we use thread grinding to meet Grade 5 requirements. Additionally, we optimize these components for modules from 0.1 to 5.0, and we fully customize shaft lengths to match your specific drawings.

Worm Wheel – Dedicated Gear Hobbing

We manufacture the mating worm wheel using custom-matched gear hobs or fly-cutting techniques.

Recommended Material Combinations

The service life of a worm gear set is determined by the selection of suitable materials. As a general rule, the worm shaft should have higher hardness than the worm wheel. Below are our recommended material pairings.

Worm materialWorm wheel material
20CrMnTi carburized (HRC 58–62)Phosphor bronze ZCuSn10Pb1
45# steel, induction hardenedAluminum bronze ZCuAl10Fe3
304 / 316 stainless steelStainless steel worm wheel or nylon PA66
Hardened alloy steelNylon PA66 / POM acetal

Custom material pairings — including PEEK for high-temperature medical applications, aluminum bronze with Ni-P plating for salt-fog marine duty, and POM worm wheels for ultra-quiet instrument drives — are available subject to engineering review. Minimum order: 5 sets.

FAQ

What exactly is included in a matched worm gear set?

A matched worm gear set from Hansheng includes one worm shaft and one worm wheel.

What gear ratios can you achieve in a worm gear set?

Standard ratios range from 5:1 up to 100:1 in a single stage. The ratio is a direct function of the worm wheel tooth count divided by the number of worm starts.

Is a worm gear set inherently self-locking?

No. Self locking depends solely on the worm’s lead angle relative to the equivalent friction angle.
Self locking condition: Lead angle < friction angle.
For bronze on steel with standard lubrication, a lead angle below ~6° ensures self locking; above ~6°, back driving is possible and a brake is required.

How do I choose between a phosphor bronze and an aluminum bronze worm wheel?

Phosphor bronze (ZCuSn10Pb1) exhibits a friction coefficient approximately 30% lower than that of aluminum bronze, making it suitable for high-speed (input > 1000 rpm) and heavy-load applications. Aluminum bronze (ZCuAl10Fe3) delivers higher load capacity at a lower material cost, making it ideal for general automation, conveyor, and packaging applications.

Can you manufacture a custom worm gear set from my drawing or CAD file?

Yes. Submit your 2D DXF/DWG or 3D STEP file through our inquiry form, along with the module, number of teeth, material, precision grade, and quantity. We will return a DFM (Design for Manufacturability) review and a formal quotation within 24 hours on business days.

What is the minimum order quantity, and how long does a sample take?

The minimum order quantity for custom worm gear sets is 5 sets, whether for standard modules, non-standard modules (e.g., 0.3 mm or 6 mm), or special processes such as carburizing and quenching or Ni-P plating. Sample and prototype lead time is 1–2 weeks from drawing approval.
