Introduction

Product Overview

Unlike spur gears, steel helical gears achieve a higher degree of meshing, which improves transmission efficiency while significantly reducing operating noise.

At Hansheng, we have been manufacturing custom steel helical gears for over a decade, supplying OEM partners across industrial automation, power transmission, and mechanical engineering sectors.

Manufacturing Process — Matching the Process to Your Gear

Hansheng operates three core gear cutting processes. For steel helical gears specifically, tooth geometry, precision requirements, and production volume determine our process selection. Here is how each process applies:

Gear Hobbing — for External Steel Helical Gears

Equipment: Ningjiang CNC Horizontal Gear Hobbing Machine YK3610

Achievable Precision: GB/T 10095 Grade 6–7 (equivalent to ISO 1328 Grade 6–7)

Max Module: 3 | Max Workpiece Diameter: 200mm

Gear hobbing is the most efficient and cost-effective method for manufacturing external steel helical gears. The YK3610’s CNC helical interpolation capability ensures consistent tooth lead and profile accuracy across the full batch.

Gear Skiving-for External and internal helical gears

Equipment: Kashifuji Gear Skiving Machine KPS30

Precision: GB/T 10095 Grade 5–7 (ISO 1328 classes 5–7)

Kashifuji KPS30 is very suitable for machining internal helical gears, which cannot be achieved by hobbing. More importantly, it is possible to perform hard skiving, which can refine the gear workpiece after heat treatment and correct the deformation caused by heat treatment. At Hansheng, all steel helical gears that require ISO level 5 accuracy will undergo hard skiving treatment.

Gear Shaping – for Internal helical gears

Precision: GB/T 10095 Grade 7–9(ISO 1328 Grade 7–9)

Precision is slightly lower than hobbing, but fully adequate for GB 7–9 industrial applications.

Industry Applications

Steel helical gears from Hansheng are in active service across the following sectors:

Industrial Gearboxes and Speed Reducers

The majority of industrial helical reducers rely on steel helical gears at Grade 6–7(ISO 1328) precision. For example, hollow rotary tables, planetary gearboxes, etc.

Conveyor and Material Handling Systems

Continuous transmission while maintaining strict tolerance accuracy. For such application scenarios, we generally use 40Cr or 45 # steel and steel helical gears that have undergone induction hardening treatment.

Machine Tool Spindle and Feed Drives

For applications where noise and backlash directly affect machined surface quality, Grade 5–6(ISO 1328) steel helical gears produced via our skiving process are the appropriate specification.

Power Transmission and Industrial Drive Trains

Our 42CrMo material steel helical gears have extremely high fatigue resistance and are mainly used in heavy-duty reducers and large transmission systems.

Quality Assurance

Very batch of steel helical gears shipped from Hansheng is inspected on dedicated gear measurement equipment. Our inspection output includes quantitative charts for tooth profile error, lead error, and pitch error. basic pass/fail stamps, we provide actual measurement data against ISO 1328 / GB/T 10095 tolerance bands.

Accompanying documentation with each shipment:

  • Dimensional inspection report
  • Material mill certificate
  • Heat treatment hardness verification report
  • Gear accuracy charts (profile, lead, pitch)

Customization and OEM Service

Hansheng operates as a full-service OEM gear manufacturer. For custom steel helical gears, our engineering team supports:

Drawing-based manufacturing: Submit STEP, IGS, or PDF with tolerances, material specification, heat treatment hardness (HRC), and accuracy class

Design consultation: If you have performance requirements but no finalized drawing, our engineers can recommend gear geometry, module, and material

DFM review: We flag manufacturability issues before cutting begins, reducing prototype iteration cycles

NDA: To ensure that the customer’s drawing information is not leaked, we can sign a Confidentiality Agreement after accepting the customer’s drawings.

Prototype to production: Single samples to volume batch orders — the unit economics improve at higher quantities, but we do not impose prohibitive minimums(General MOQ: 5)

Standard lead times: Prototype 7–15 business days | Production batch subject to quantity and process confirmation

FAQ

What steel grade is recommended for high-load helical gears?

For heavy-load applications, we recommend 20CrMnTi with carburizing and quenching (case hardness HRC 58–62) or 42CrMo with quenching and tempering. For moderate loads, 40Cr with induction hardening (HRC 48–54) offers a strong cost-to-performance ratio. The correct choice depends on your specific torque, speed, and duty cycle — we provide material recommendations as part of our quotation process.

What is the difference between GB Grade 6 and Grade 7 for steel helical gears?

GB/T 10095 Grade 6 has tighter tolerance bands on profile error, lead error, and pitch variation than Grade 7. For most industrial gearbox and power transmission applications, Grade 6–7 is fully adequate. Grade 5 is typically reserved for low-backlash precision drives such as machine tool axes or servo-driven positioning systems.

Can you manufacture both left-hand and right-hand steel helical gears?

Yes. Both helix directions are standard for our hobbing and skiving processes. Helix angle and direction are specified at the drawing stage, and we confirm both before cutting begins.

How does heat treatment affect the final precision of steel helical gears?

Heat treatment always introduces some dimensional distortion. For Grade 6–7 gears, post-heat-treatment correction is not always required if distortion is controlled. For Grade 5 gears, we routinely perform hard skiving after heat treatment using our Kashifuji KPS30 to correct any tooth profile deviation and restore the required accuracy class.

Which process — hobbing or skiving — produces better steel helical gears?

They serve different purposes. Hobbing (YK3610) is the most efficient and cost-effective process for external helical gears at Grade 6–7 in batch production.

Skiving (KPS30) is the right choice when Grade 5 precision is needed, when the gear requires post-hardening finishing, or when the geometry is an internal helical form. For most volume industrial orders, hobbing is the primary process with skiving reserved for critical finishing operations.

What documents do you provide with steel helical gear orders?

Every shipment includes a dimensional inspection report, material mill certificate, heat treatment hardness report, and gear accuracy charts showing measured profile, lead, and pitch error values against the specified GB/T 10095 tolerance class.

Can you handle both small prototype batches and large production runs?

Yes. We support prototype quantities for design validation and scale to production volumes for series orders. Unit cost improves with volume — we provide transparent pricing at each quantity tier so you can evaluate total program cost accurately.
